Permissible Use of AI Tools
Authors may utilize generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard) for the following purposes, provided their use is appropriately disclosed:
Language and Grammar Enhancement: Improving readability and correcting grammatical errors.
Idea Generation and Structuring: Assisting in brainstorming, outlining, or summarizing content.
Data Analysis Support: Aiding in data processing or visualization, with human oversight.
Disclosure Requirement: Any use of AI tools must be transparently disclosed in the manuscript. Authors should include a statement detailing the AI tool used, its purpose, and the extent of its contribution. This aligns with policies from organizations like IEEE and ACM, which mandate disclosure of AI-generated content in the acknowledgments section of submissions.
Prohibited Practices
Undisclosed AI-Generated Content: Submitting AI-generated text, figures, images, or code without proper disclosure is considered unethical and may lead to rejection or retraction.
AI as an Author: AI tools cannot be credited as authors, as they do not meet the criteria for authorship, which includes accountability and the ability to respond to critiques.
Fabrication or Manipulation of Data: Using AI to fabricate or manipulate research data, results, or references is strictly prohibited and constitutes scientific misconduct.
Author Responsibilities
Authors are fully responsible for the content of their submissions, including any portions generated with the assistance of AI tools. They must ensure the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their work, and verify all AI-generated content for correctness and appropriateness.
Review Process
During the peer review process, reviewers are prohibited from using AI tools to generate review content or summaries, as this may breach confidentiality agreements and compromise the integrity of the review .
Sample Disclosure Statement
"The authors utilized [AI Tool Name] to assist with [specific tasks, e.g., language editing, data visualization]. All AI-generated content was reviewed and edited to ensure accuracy, and the authors take full responsibility for the final manuscript."
